England has a range of top golfing stars as of 2024 and many of the nation’s biggest names are yet to peak and truly show their greatest capabilities.
For as long as golf has existed, England has been one of the prominent countries for producing talent and having regular representation in the most prestigious competitions.
England’s leading players at present are situated firmly amongst the top players in the Official World Golf Rankings and some of them have not even reached 30, which suggests they have plenty of time to show further improvement yet.
Here we will look at the top players that hail from England in the professional sport today – one of which provides the West Midlands with representation at the major events.
Tommy Fleetwood
Tommy Fleetwood is undoubtedly England’s leading overall player having cemented that position with the silver medal he claimed at the Paris Olympic Games.
He is also the English star most likely to secure further glory in 2025 according to betting on golf. Fleetwood’s leading chance of winning a major next year is predicted to arrive at The Open Championship, where he is offered at 20/1.
The Southport-born golfer entered 2024 ranked 14th in the world, but his strong form throughout the year so far has seen him threaten to enter the top 10 – now ranked 11th. Fleetwood’s strongest showing throughout the major schedule came in the US Masters where he finished tied third.
The standings ultimately show he is comfortably England’s leading star and his medal-worthy performance in Paris in August, showed the entire world that he is spearheading this generation of English talent.
Aaron Rai
Aaron Rai is an example of a top English player who has yet to enter his thirties which means his current career-high 22nd place ranking may be far from his peak.
In recent years, Rai’s breakthrough into top-level golf has already seen him make a name for himself as one of the greatest players to ever emerge from the West Midlands. However, he has taken his biggest strides forward yet in 2024, having begun the year at 64th position in the world rankings.
The highlight of Rai’s year so far has been his maiden PGA Tour win which came in the Wyndham Championship. The star from Wolverhampton finished ahead of runner-up Max Greyserman by two strokes to finally get his first win after three years on the tour.
If Rai sustains his impressive rate of improvement into the long-term future, he could become England’s greatest and perhaps one of the golfing world’s most extraordinary players in the coming years.
Matt Fitzpatrick
Matt Fitzpatrick has been an established name in top-level golf for many years now having won the British Masters as far back as 2015, and he picked up a major win in the US Open of 2022.
While Fitzpatrick is the only Englishman on this list who has won a major championship, the current rankings suggest both Fleetwood and Rai are superior players in the game’s current climate.
The player from Sheffield entered 2024 in a remarkable eighth place in the rankings but has had a disappointing major season that has seen him tumble to 24th place as of mid-August – which makes him England’s third highest-ranked player.
Fleetwood and Rai look like players that could potentially secure major victories in the future and Fitzpatrick is a player that could potentially recapture his past form to add further success – the future is bright for English golf.
