Music to the ears: Alcester singers launch their 20th annual competition

Redditch Editorial 18th Oct, 2018   0

THE renowned Young Musician Competition organised by Alcester Singers is about to be launched.

Every November the choir invites musicians aged between 11 and 18 years who live or attend school within 10 miles of Alcester to enter with the chance to win a £200 prize to put towards developing their musical skills further.

The competition itself is an opportunity to perform for and audience and the winner is also invited to take part in an Alcester Singers concert.

The event, now 20 years old, is sponsored by the Howarth Memorial Fund.

The Howarth family donated money to Alcester Singers in memory of John Howarth, a former choir member, with the wish that it was used by Alcester Singers to encourage and support young people in Alcester who play a musical instrument or sing.

And so the Young Musician Competition was born.

This year the competition is on Friday, November 23 and all those entering should be of Grade 5 standard or higher.

However, all musicians are welcome no matter what instrument they play and singers are encouraged to enter too.

The closing date is Wednesday, November 7.
