Avalanche of art leads to cancellation of Studley postcard painting auction

A PLANNED auction of postcard-sized artwork has had such a terrific response organisers have been forced to cancel it – due to the sheer volume of paintings submitted.

The art had been due to go under the hammer this Saturday at the Artists Workhouse in Redditch Road, Studley.

However with more than 220 pieces of work – and more coming in – curator Dawn Harris realised it was impossible to carry out the sale in one evening.

As a result an exhibition and sale of the pieces will now be held over three days on December 8th, 9th, 10th giving people more time to view the works and if anything catches their eye, make a purchase.

“We had a meeting and decided that with the cumulative total of postcards currently exceeding 220 pieces it was totally impractical to auction all these artworks in one evening,” said Dawn.

“I’m truly shocked by the response. I thought there would be a core of people willing to back us at the Artists Workhouse and to back Studley but this has gone way beyond my wildest dreams,” said Dawn.

“The generosity of people and their willingness to take part is wonderful.”

The auction was planned as a fund raiser for the Put Studley on the Map project, a crowdfunding scheme aimed at raising £36,660 to launch a visitors’ website for the village and install signposts highlighting Studley’s considerable attractions.

“We have considered different options that showcase the amazing generosity and support from the artist community and maximise the amount of funds we can raise and have decided to curate the postcards into an exhibition, where all of the works can be viewed and will be for sale,” added Dawn.
