A WORLD premiere, a new musical and family fun are on the cards for Spring 2023 at The Rep.
A jam-packed programme of shows has been announced across the theatre’s three auditoria, The House, The Door and The Studio.
Bosses are promising to build on the stunning success of 2023 with new major shows and some favourites returning to the stage.
Sean Foley, artistic director at The Rep, said; “Spring 2024 promises to build upon The Rep’s stunning success of 2023.
“We’re committed to bringing the very best theatre to Birmingham and West Midlands’ audiences so we’re thrilled to join forces with the world-class creative team of Bhangra Nation – A New Musical.
“Our three stages are full of original, exciting theatre for everyone over the coming year, including the very first stage version of iconic British tragi-comedy Withnail and I.
“It’s a personal thrill to be in a position to direct this production, which the film’s writer Bruce Robinson is adapting from his original script.
“Joining these shows in the line-up for our largest theatre space, the House, are two productions inspired by works of literature set in the past and the future.
“We look forward to welcoming audiences to enjoy the experience of live theatre.”
The season begins with the UK Premiere of Bhangra Nation – A New Musical from February 17 to March 16.
Bosses say this new musical has been built and rehearsed at The Rep and is bold, intoxicating and joyous musical comedy for today.
This is followed by a number of stage adaptations of film and literature classics, including World Premieres of Withnail and I, The Promise, Minority Report and an inventive adaptation of the fable Blue Beard.
Alongside brand new productions, The Studio space will stage Black is the Color of my Voice, which returns to The Rep by popular demand.
The show, which runs from February 27 to March 2 is inspired by the story of Nina Simone, this unmissable one-woman show features many of her most iconic songs performed live.
As well as adult theatre, The Door will host an adaptation of Can Bears Ski? – a play based on the book by poet Raymond Antrobus – which shows how love and family can help children to overcome a difficult world.
This will run from February 9 to 10.
