A TOTAL of 3,907 drivers were caught speeding in Warwickshire during an anti speeding campaign during this July and August – including a woman doing 105mph down the M6.

In just two weeks starting on July 26, 161 drivers were stopped for speeding in 147 cars, 11 vans and three motorcycles.

In the same period, static and mobile speed cameras in the region clocked a total of 3,746 driver speeding offences on Warwickshire’s roads, including motorway speed detections.

During the campaign one man was stopped for doing 96mph on the M69 southbound.

A woman was also stopped for doing 105mph on the M6 southbound.

In total 24 drivers are being prosecuted at court due to driving at excessive speed.

Another 51 drivers were stopped for speeding in 30mph residential zones and 79 drivers were also stopped for offences in 70mph zones.

In all 120 drivers received speeding tickets and an additional 41 drivers were offered words of advice about their decision to speed.

The vast majority – 79.5 per cent – of offenders were male and over 25 years old.

Chief Inspector Faz Chishty said “Driving safely within speed limits helps to keep all road users safe and to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

“During the summer holidays there are more children, cyclists, walkers and pedestrians on our roads, making it even more important for drivers to think of others and drive at an appropriate speed according to the conditions, within the maximum speed limit.

“Speeding is a choice drivers make and we will continue to target those irresponsible and dangerous drivers who choose to drive above the speed limit.”

Police and Crime Commissioner for Warwickshire Philip Seccombe said: “The Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership is proposing an ambitious target of a 50 per cent reduction in road deaths and serious injuries in Warwickshire by 2030 and reducing speeding is key to this.”
