TRAVELLERS who set up camp on derelict land in Edward Street and at one of the car parks by Forge Mill Museum are believed to be in the area for a major wedding or funeral.

They arrived over Thursday night, some 25 caravans rolling onto land opposite Redditch Railway Station with seven more making camp by the museum.

Tom Wilkinson, who owns the Edward Street land, once the site of the AP Morrall needle factory, described it ‘as a lesson learnt’ but the Travellers had undertaken to be off site by the middle of next week. Failing that an eviction notice would be enforced.

The arrival of the Travellers also coincides with the Christmas Fayre at Forge Mill Needle Museum this weekend, December 2-3, however a borough council spokesperson said he did not forsee any issues with the weekend’s events and there was ample parking available for visitors.

“Meanwhile the Travellers have been advised to leave in the course of our routine process,” he added.
