IN less than 24 hours more than 400,000 people in the UK signed up to become NHS volunteers to help the most vulnerable people in society.
The mass sign-up follows the Government’s request for 250,000 people to help those who are isolating during the coronavirus outbreak.
Despite an extra 150,000 applicants, anyone who is over the age of 18, fit and healthy and non-symptomatic can still offer their time to the scheme.
Jobs include delivering shopping to vulnerable people, transporting patients to and from hospital, driving medicines and equipment to NHS facilities and speaking to those suffering from loneliness by telephone.
The scheme aims to help take the pressure off frontline NHS staff.
