6Towns Credit Union suspends drop-ins for Redditch customers

Redditch Editorial 8th Jan, 2018   0

6Towns Credit Union drop-ins for its customers in Redditch have been suspended until further notice.

Winyates-based REACH CIC has been informed that 6Towns Credit Union, based in West Bromwich, is undertaking a review of its community contact points.

It means that all such points have been suspended while the review takes place.

For Redditch customers the contact points, at The Space in Winyates Centre, St Andrew’s Church and Willow Trees Community Centre in Church Hill, Woodrow Library in Woodrow Centre and at The Ecumenical Centre in Evesham Walk, are now suspended.

Liz Williams, community enterprise co-ordinator for REACH CIC said: “We are very disappointed with this news which we received today, January 8, although we fully understand that 6 Towns Credit Union feels this review is necessary.

“We would like to reassure our Redditch supporters that whilst we won’t be servicing the contact points until the review is complete, 6Towns continues to operate is services from their head office in West Bromwich.”

6Towns Credit Union launched in the town in June 2016 and quickly won backing from civic leaders and then town MP Karen Lumley.

It offered hard-pressed local people an opportunity to avoid pay day loan companies, loan sharks and high interest stores by offering loans at highly competitive rates, and was especially beneficial for those without a bank account.

In the following 18 months it expanded its reach within the town to the benefit of more local people.

It also proved highly attractive to savers.
