A barrowload of fun in Studley

THE STREETS of Studley were filled with merriment and mayhem last Sunday when the annual wheelbarrow race took centre stage.

Organised by The Bell, 44 competitors had to whizz around a route that took in 12 pit stops where a complimentary drink had to be consumed each time before entrants were allowed to finally cross the finishing line at the pub on the Alcester Road.

The crazy capers raised £1,024.81 for Studley in Bloom and Studley Christmas Lights and was held in special memory of former firefighter Des Crow who died last September.

Mr Crow who was also chair of Studley Flower Show was the original organiser of the event.

The winners of the race for the second year in a row were Adam Newman and Dan Joiner, who won a bottle of whisky, £50 and chocolates. Their names will also be engraved on a new trophy bought this year by the Crow family.

The best fancy dress prize went to The Flintstones, Christian Daelman and David Humphries.

Steve Boswell, landlord of the Bell Inn, said: “Des has kept a hand in for many years helping host the big day along with his wonderful wife Pam and son Brian.

“He sadly passed away one week after the wheelbarrow race last year and is missed by many after he raised thousands of pounds for Studley over the years with the race and Studley Flower Show.

“I would like to thank all of the venues and our lovely Studley publication that took part in the race again this year to keep this fantastic tradition alive.

“We are very lucky to have their support.”

“Also thank you to O’Reilly’s Scaffolding company donating us a wonderful stage for the day.”

The day ended with hot food, and live music at The Bell.
