A classical treat as choral society gets set for cathedral concert

CLASSICAL music lovers are in for a treat this autumn, when the 150 voices of the region’s leading large choir, Worcester Festival Choral Society, bring a programme of much-loved works by Mozart and Fauré to Worcester Cathedral.

The major concert, on Saturday, November 27 at 7.30pm, is Worcester Festival Choral Society’s first for almost two years.

It also marks another milestone: the Society’s 160th anniversary season at the heart of the county’s classical music scene.

On the programme will be Mozart’s lively orchestral Overture to The Magic Flute and his vibrant choral composition, Solemn Vespers. Concert-goers will also recognise the heavenly melodies of Fauré’s choral works Cantique de Jean Racine and moving Requiem mass.

Under the baton of Worcester Cathedral director of music Samuel Hudson, the Chorus will be accompanied by the Meridian Sinfonia and acclaimed soloists Emilia Morton (soprano), Cathy Bell (mezzo soprano), Frederick Jones (tenor) and Julien Van Mellaerts (baritone).

Ben Cooper, Worcester Festival Choral Society chairman, said: “After such a long break, music lovers and performers alike are crying out for the return of large scale concerts!

“We can’t wait to bring these amazing works for audiences to enjoy.”

Two other concerts will also form part of Worcester Festival Choral Society’s 160th anniversary season.

Handel’s glittering Messiah will be performed at Worcester Cathedral on December 11 and Bach’s powerful St John Passion on March 19, 2022.

Concert tickets, priced £20 to £25 are available online at www.wfcs.online or by calling TicketSource on 0333 666 3366 (local call rate).

To mark the Society’s 160th anniversary, a full colour book, A Choral Chronicle – The History of Worcester Festival Choral Society, is also available from www.wfcs.online with all profits going to the charity’s funds.
