A day for the history books as Redditch museum celebrates first anniversary

Redditch Editorial 10th Nov, 2022   0

REDDITCH Local History Museum had its own day for the record books last Friday as it celebrated its first anniversary.

The museum opened in 2021 after years of trying by volunteers, intending to celebrate and preserve Redditch’s rich history.

An event was held at the museum to mark the special anniversary and to thank everyone who has supported them over the past 12 months.

Volunteers have now been able to collect and store over 500 items in the archives and have begun to digitalise many of them.

They also host outreach programmes such as schools and young people’s support, take on work experience students and use social media to get the community involved.

Inside the museum, residents can cast their minds back to 1950s Evesham Street with a stunning model recreation, and they can read through some of the Towns biggest stories through the years in the ‘Redditch in Print’ section.

And there are over 90 videos of old Redditch available on a touch screen along with much more.

Pete Harris of the museum said: “I’m very proud of the work and effort we’ve put into the museum, it’s an unbelievable place.

“We started this museum because we were passionate about saving our past, when the old town disappeared a lot of people’s memories disappeared too so we wanted to preserve those memories here”.

Museum trustee Derek Coombes added: “We’ve achieved a lot this year, but there is a lot more to do.

“This place is wanted and loved by residents, we have a comments book where they can write what they think of the museum and reading that justifies why we started and what we’re doing”.

The museum relies on donations and fund-raising to continue.
