A growing attraction for Redditch community

THE ancient 12th Century St Leonard’s Church in Beoley is preparing to host its annual Snowdrop Weekend on Saturday and Sunday February 11-12.

The event has proved to be big attraction over the years with visitors coming from all over to view the mass of snowdrops covering the church grounds, and also discovering more about the history of both the church and the Sheldon family whose tombs are in the church.

The church uses this weekend to celebrate the work it does both within the church and the community of Church Hill, Abbey Park and Beoley.

This year, as well as displays by the many church groups there will also be special display about the ‘skull’.

This was reputed to be the skull of William Shakespeare, and was the subject of a Channel 4 documentary last year.

Evidence from the programme suggested it was unlikely to be the famous ‘Bard’ but there is still speculation about its real identity.

Parts are missing, but evidence indicates it might actually be that of a woman. But who?

Visitors will be able to see the 3D model produced as part of the extensive research by Leicester University and talk to members of the church who were involved in the investigation.

This year it has also been decided to run another of St Leonard’s very successful photographic competitions on the theme of ‘Out & About in Redditch’. Entries welcome.

In addition children are invited to design and make a bookmark on the theme of ‘Snowdrops’.

Already a number of local schools have agreed to enter but it is open to all children.

Full details of both competitions are available from the organiser John Gardner on 01527 62148.
