A lovely pair: Studley gallery turns bras into an artform at new exhibition

THE bra as an artform is the subject of a new exhibition at the Artists’ Workhouse in Studley which opens with a free preview evening and concert on Friday (March 24).

‘Nine Women’ has been created by Elena Thomas, who says: “Invisibility is not a super-power, it’s the curse of the middle-aged woman.”

And the exhibition, which opens with an evening of songs, is sure to challenge and entertain gallery-goers .

“There’s a serious side to the story which is told through the bras but there is also going to be quite a lot of humour too,” said gallery manager Dawn Harris.

“The bras will be hanging at chest height which makes for some interesting photographs.”

An Arts Council project, this will be its UK premiere of the exhibition and represents quite a coup for the Artists Workhouse.

“Elena is a textile artist and poet who has converted her poems into songs to tell the story behind the exhibition,” said Dawn.

“On the evening she will be accompanied by Dan Whitehouse on guitar to give a performance.

Everyone is invited to the concert and exhibition opening.

Elena will also be running two workshops that complement the show – for more details email [email protected] .

Nine Women will continue until April 2, open 11am to 4pm, closed Monday, Tuesday and Sundays by appointment.
