A tree for every resident: Local authority reveals ambitious plans

Redditch Editorial 7th Nov, 2021   0

AMBITIOUS plans to plant a tree for every resident of Warwickshire have been announced by the county council.

The announcement was made as world leaders gather in Glasgow for the COP26 conference.

The initiative aims to restore parts of forests and wooded areas that have been long lost, such as the ancient Forest of Arden, which once covered most of the county.

The council has been successful – along with district and borough partners – in their bid for £212,000 from the Forestry Commission’s Local Authority Treescape Fund to plant 2,000 standard trees.

The authority is also funding a number of other schemes through the Green Shoots Community Climate Change Fund and the Queen’s Green Canopy.

To keep track of trees being planted across the county, Warwickshire has recently signed up to the West Midlands Combined Authority’s Virtual Forest Platform.

This online mapping tool is designed to allow anyone who has planted a tree to register it with the virtual forest.
