Aiming for a record-breaking Poppy Appeal in Alcester

THE ALCESTER branch of the Royal British Legion are gearing up for the annual Poppy Appeal, striving to beat the £13,000 they raised last year.

This Saturday (October 28) the Alcester Poppy Appeal will officially launch at the Alcester Methodist Church in Priory Road, with 1940s music and a parade of re-enactor military vehicles, alongside cakes, refreshments and a raffle.

From 11am until 1pm, guests are welcomed to support the cause – the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign held every year to remember the fallen Service men and women killed in conflict.

Entrance to the event costs £1 and a brave Alcester lady who did a a tandem parachute jump during the summer in aid of the Poppy Appeal will also be making an appearance.

The daring Mrs Christine Scott took to the skies in August for the skydive to mark her 75th birthday – a feat which saw her jump out of a plane at 13,000 feet and plummet at around 120mph.

After covering thousands of feet in around five seconds, her instructor deployed the parachute and the pair glided back down to solid ground.

“It was my big challenge for my 75th year,” said Christine, who lives at Malin Court in Alcester.
