ALCESTER county councillor Mike Gittus has announced he will not be standing at this year’s election on May 4.

Coun Gittus, who will continue as a Stratford district councillor, has represented the market town for eight years at county hall.

He said: “During that time I have had some remarkable achievements and had the pleasure of bringing about many benefits to the community I have so proudly served.

“But I haven’t been able to succeed on my own, I have had the benefit of the residents of this wonderful community to support, advise and direct me.”

He added that his single aim on being elected was to prevent Alcester from suffering a repeat of the flooding of the town which occurred in 2007.

He therefore gave up work and through himself into county business, tackling flooding, getting involved in dementia care, the preservation of the town museum and library, the retention of the fire station, investment in High Itreet infrastructure, helped with the implementation and funding for a health and wellbeing officer, highways safety schemes and much more.

“It has been a true pleasure to serve my community, but there comes a time when you have to reflect on the 24/7/365 aspect of the job, plus the financial and personal commitment the role requires. I shall continue to support the community I love and respect and hope to continue working with the many organisations that I am involved,” he said.
