Alcester coffee morning to keep town looking blooming great

A COFFEE morning to keep Alcester looking ‘blooming great’ made more than £1,000 on Saturday .

Alcester in Bloom volunteers sold copious cuppas and home-made bakes at the home of its chair Maggie Payne who has been the driving force behind the group for 35 years.

With her committee of 12, they help to fundraise and organise the many additional green-fingered helpers who look after 40 planters that spring into life each season with floral displays.

Maggie said: “We made £1,140 in just two hours which was not bad going.

“People arrived at 10am and kept coming and going all morning.

“It costs about £14,000 every year to keep the town looking good so we have to keep fundraising and depend on the public to support us.

“Without them we wouldn’t be able to do it.”

The team runs between six to eight fundraising events a year in the form of quizzes, afternoon teas and a stall at Alcester Street Market.

Maggie added: “We just keep going.”

Earlier this year she was chosen as Citizen of the Year by Alcester’s mayor for her tireless work with the organisation.

The town was named a national winner of Britain in Bloom in 1998 and has been Heart of England regional winners seven times.
