Derelict Alcester squash courts transformed into community crafting hub

CONDEMNED squash courts in Alcester have been turned into a creative hub thanks to a community project led by the town council.

The £140,000 transformation has seen the 1970’s building undergo extensive renovation with new roof, electrics, ventilation and heating to become the Alcester Community Shed.

The facility will be home to the Men’s Shed, a dedicated space where fellas can come together to form friendships whilst pursuing practical skills like making and mending.

The Men’s Shed movement started in Australia about three decades ago and the new Alcester branch situated rear of the Greig Hall community centre will join the 800 sheds currently in operation across the UK.

The building contains a multipurpose area and a workshop fitted out with machine tools and will also provide a base for other arts and crafts groups.

Two open days have been planned to offer residents and representatives from interested community groups the chance to have a look around. These are on Friday, September 20 from 2pm to 4pm and Saturday, October 12 from 9.30am to 12pm.

The project has been led by Councillor Mark Cargill, chair of the Health and Wellbeing Partnership.

He said: “In less than a year we have transformed a redundant and derelict squash courts into a marvellous community space, our shed.

“The shed will become the home of Alcester Men’s Shed and we are keen to hear from anyone wishing to join us.

“The facility will be available to other groups who wish to run ‘doing or making’ activities. We are looking forward to welcoming as many people as possible on our open days.”
