BIG-hearted Alcester Male Voice Choir have raised a staggering £3,400 from a concert in aid of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Fisher House, their home from home for military patients and their families.
The choir had adopted Fisher House as their charity to support after singing Christmas carols there in December last year, and pledged to raise £1,000 for the cause, which they duly presented at the finale of the concert, in Birmingham Town Hall.
It was followed by a presentation by former soldier and triple amputee, Dave Watson, an advocate for Fisher House at the QE.
He explained how he had been seriously injured in Afghanistan and how the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Fisher House project offers a home- away-from-home for military patients and their families
Hee received an emotional standing ovation, before a bucket was passed round which raised an astounding £2,400 from the audience.
“It was utterly overwhelming, unbelievable and very moving, the whole programme was well received but it just capped the entire evening,” said choir founder and director of music Judith Land BEM.
The choir has built up a loyal following and five coaches from Alcester, Redditch, Studley, Astwood Bank and Bromsgrove took fans into the city for the concert.
Michael Tivy from the QE Hospital Birmingham Charity said: “Many congratulations on a stunning concert. We would like to thank the choir and audience for their kind generosity. It is a brilliant result, one that we’re very grateful for.”
Judith added: “Planning and singing to 800 lively people in such a wonderful historic concert hall is very rewarding. We were more than delighted to include a celebration to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th Birthday and to be able to support Fisher House. I can’t thank the audience and choir enough.”
The 80-strong Alcester Male Voice Choir now have their sights set on Blenheim Palace where they will perform the same programme in June.
