Alcester retiree cycles 400km through Southeast Asia for charity

AN ALCESTER retiree has cycled 400km through Southeast Asia raising £3,569 for charity.

Kay Mayne, aged 66, who lives at Great Alne Park, recently embarked on a once in lifetime challenge to cycle through Southeast Asia to raise funds for CARE International UK.

Kay moved to Great Alne Park in August 2023, alongside her husband of 35 years, Les.

She has been involved with the charity Lendwithcare (Run by CARE International UK) for seven years and has made 222 loans to entrepreneurs in many low income countries.

Before this momentous challenge, Kay last cycled in 2005 when she competed in some triathlons culminating in a half Ironman.

After suffering with arthritis and eventually having knee replacements in October 2021 and February 2022, Kay got into indoor cycling as a central part of her rehab, before getting back on an outdoor bike in February 2023 when the charity first advertised the bike ride and she was accepted to take part.

Kay surpassed her £3,330 fundraising target and has generated a total of £3,569 so far.

She said: “I am proud to have supported many entrepreneurs and seen the benefits of my support in helping to change their lives for the better.

“I wanted to get back into cycling for several reasons but after seeing Lendwithcare advertise the challenge, it was a great incentive.

“Living at Great Alne Park has helped me get back into cycling thanks to the gym facilities on site and beautiful surroundings perfect for cycling.

“It also gives me peace of mind when travelling as it is a very safe place to lock up and leave unoccupied if Les and I go away for an extended period.

“It was great being away by myself and knowing Les was very content and happy at the village thanks to all the activities for him to take part in and neighbours to chat to.”
