OLDER people from Alcester will be taking part in a dragon boat race to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.
On June 17, 14 residents aged between 70 and 81 who all reside at Great Alne Park will be going head-to-head with members of the company’s executive committee, with the hope of raising £1,000 for the cause.
Resident David Aspinall, whose idea it was to take part in the dragon boat race, said: “As a member of the Edgbaston Convention Rotary Club Birmingham, I’m proud to be involved in organising the dragon boat race to support the Alzheimer’s Society.
“Those taking part are encouraged to wear fancy dress and a prize will be awarded to the best-dressed team.
“It will be a great day out and we’re pleased to have the support of Inspired Villages for this very worthy cause.”
The two teams will be racing each other in 12-metre dragon boats, all with the aim of raising as much cash as possible for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Jamie Bunce, CEO of Inspired Villages, is joining residents and colleagues taking part.
He said: “At Inspired Villages our whole ethos is centred around creating communities that improve mental, physical, and social wellbeing. That applies to residents, colleagues and our wider communities.
“The residents at Great Alne Park never cease to amaze me with their appetite for keeping fit and supporting good causes.
“Inspired by their efforts, my fellow colleagues and I gladly accepted the invitation to take part in the dragon boat race, knowing it will be an incredibly fun day.
“As a leader in the later living sector, the Alzheimer’s Society is naturally a charity close to our heart.
“Dementia is the biggest health and social challenge of our time and we’re proud to support to support the charity in any way we can.”
