THE Alcester branch of the Royal British Legion and assembled dignitaries marked the 100th birthday of the RAF on Sunday, April 1 last week.

In an introduction by branch chairman Mike Gittus the birth of the RAF was explained as well as a brief explanation of its pivotal role in the Battle of Britain.

The official flag was raised by Senior Aircraftsman Mark Dyer, who spent ten years in the service, while Chris Scott read out the poem ‘High Flight’ by John Gillespie Megee.

The wreath was laid by an emotional Anne Prince, daughter of Dennis and Freda Colbourne, both of whom served in the RAF.

The occasion was all the more poignant coming shortly after the death of her father and with her mother ill in hospital.

“This was an opportunity for Alcester to honour and celebrate the brave men and women of the RAF, now, then and into the future,” said Mr Gittus.
