Alcester teen wins sports award

A TEEN athlete from Alcester has been named as the 2015 OCS Young Sportsperson of the Year Award for the Central and North region.

Rory Dwyer was presented with the accolade at this year’s OCS Young Sportsperson Awards ceremony at City Hall in London, which was hosted by BBC Sport commentator and former international gymnast Gabby Logan.

The 17-year-old got his first taste of athletics at school at the tender age of nine.

He enjoyed it so much he joined the local athletics club where he has trained regularly ever since and competes for his school in Stratford upon Avon.

Rory added that although he enjoys the challenge of being the best he can be and while it is always great to win medals, he gets just as much satisfaction from making small improvements in his personal targets.

Since the awards began in 1998, OCS has made sports bursaries of almost £600,000 to over 249 deserving young people.

The awards give outstanding young athletes recognition and support to help them with the strain of training, travelling and competing – where, more often than not, parents and guardians are the solitary sponsor.
