ALCESTER Town Hall celebrates its 400th anniversary with several exciting events planned for April and May.
The first anniversary event will be an illustrated talk on Friday, April 13, at 7.30pm by Adam Busiakiewicz on the life of Sir Fulke Greville III, who put up £300 to pay for the construction of the hall in 1618.
As well as covering the foundation and early years of the hall, Adam’s talk will also cover its years serving as a court of law to being the town jail and its role as a hospital over the last four centuries.
There will be a further talk by local historian and archaeologist Ian Greig tracing the history of the building entitled ‘From Market Hall to Social Centre’ which will be on Friday, May 11 at 7.30pm.
Chair of Alcester Town Hall Susan Juned said: “To celebrate the 400 years, volunteers who run the hall have carried out some major refurbishment projects.
“In the last year alone the outer stone work has been repaired, a stair lift has been installed, a new oak floor laid, and a time capsule placed to name a few projects.
“All are welcome to see this magnificent historic building and the way it is cared for and used by the community.”
There will also be free open days on April 14 and 15 and May 12 and 13. These will feature a collection of memorabilia and artefacts along the theme of ‘Alcester Town Hall – At the heart of the community for 400 years’ running from 10am till 3pm.
Tickets for both talks cost £5 and are available from Venue Xpresso. For more information go to www.alcestertownhall.org.uk
