Alcester U3A's rallying call for more people to join its ranks

ALCESTER u3a is inviting others to join its rapidly growing group after it celebrated moving into the town’s iconic Grieg Hall last week.

The u3a – a group for retired and semi-retired people in the area – held its first meeting at Grieg Hall earlier this month after outgrowing its previous venue at the Eric Payne Community Centre.

The group’s membership numbers have recently skyrocketed and it now boasts 264 members.

There are 25 different groups people can take part in now, with activities including learning languages, holidays, crafts and yoga.

The club also brings in guest speakers every month, with recent talks including one by police and fire service members as well as a deep dive into the golden age of radio.

Grieg Hall opened in 1958 and housed various community groups and activities.

A sports hall was later built on an adjacent site and in 2010 it was suggested the new building be made multipurpose so the original Greig Hall could be demolished to make way for houses.

The planning application was refused but the building remained closed for over a decade.

It was reopened earlier this year after an extensive community-led refurbishment and is under the management of the Greig Hall charitable incorporated organisation (CIO).

The u3a chair John Pickering was greeted by the chairman of the Grieg Hall CIO Andrew Matheson ahead of Tuesday’s meeting.

John said it was fantastic the u3a was going from strength to strength and looked forward to growing the group even further in its brand new venue.

Email membership secretary Lyn Pickering at [email protected] for more information on how to join the group.
