Alcester woman awarded £6,000 for agonising botched root canal treatment

AN Alcester woman who’s botched root canal treatment left her in pain has received £6,000 in compensation.

Between 2014 and 2016, Louise Williams saw Dr Aneka Khaira at Midlands Smile Centres in Alcester, Warwickshire, for regular check-ups.

However, things started to go wrong in September 2014. Mrs Williams was suffering from severe toothache so made an appointment with Dr Khaira. The dentist performed root canal treatment in 2014 and a crown was placed on the tooth.

But 55-year-old Mrs Williams’ toothache persisted for months and she was back with Dr Khaira in May 2015. This time the dentist performed root canal treatment and a filling on another tooth that had started to ache, but Mrs Williams had to return only a few weeks later when the tooth broke. Dr Khaira’s solution was to place a filling again.

“The pain just continued at both teeth despite the treatment I’d had.

“When you visit your dentist, you expect them to resolve any problems you are experiencing. But this wasn’t happening. I was getting infections and one of my supposedly fixed teeth broke only weeks after the dentist had fitted a filling. I couldn’t understand why. It made me question Dr Khaira’s treatment and I was really worried, so I sought a second opinion.”

Mrs Williams saw a new dentist whose X-rays revealed the extent of Dr Khaira’s poor treatment. The root canal treatment on one tooth was short, and there was not even a root canal filling present on the other tooth, only a large filling that had partly broken. This implied the dentist had been unable to locate the canals in Mrs Williams tooth altogether, and had not carried out treatment.

“I was shocked,” Mrs Williams said.

“No wonder I was in so much pain and get getting infections. It’s bad enough that one of the root canal treatments wasn’t undertaken properly, but to have such problems with two really is unbelievable. To top it off I had to spend yet more time at the dentist having corrective treatment.

“I was relieved to finally be getting my teeth sorted out but was concerned about paying to have all the treatment done again. I run my own business and had already lost earnings because I’d been attending endless dental appointments instead of working.”

Mrs Williams finally contacted the Dental Law Partnership and analysis of her dental records revealed that Dr Khaira had indeed provided inadequate root canal treatment. X-rays taken showed that Mrs Williams’ root canal treatment was short, but the dentist’s records noted it as good and she did nothing to rectify it. She had also failed to locate the root canals at Mrs Williams other tooth.

Georgina France of the Dental Law Partnership said: “What our client went through is completely unnecessary. If the dentist had performed satisfactory treatment in the first place she would not have experienced so much suffering and distress. We hope the compensation she receives goes some way towards paying for the remedial treatment required.”

The Dental Law Partnership took on Mrs William’s case in September 2015. The case was successfully settled earlier this year when the dentist paid £6,000 in an out of court settlement. The dentist did not admit liability.
