All aboard as boat club sets sail to boost funds for Redditch church

IT’S all aboard for Little Radford Boat Club who are holding a special exhibition of model ships at St Philip’s Church in Webheath.

These are no ordinary boats either – ranging up to 5ft in length these radio controlled vessels can be powered by sail, batteries and even steam.

“We have all sorts of boats here,” said the club’s John Newey.

“Some are built from scratch, some are off the shelf.

“We’re looking at around 50 boats being there for the exhibition, it should be quite a show.”

It’s all for a good cause too – the restoration of the church organ.

“There’s quite a social aspect to the club. We have about 25 members and we do events like the Stratford River Festival,” said John. “We even have a semi-submersible boat, boats with cameras onboard, it’s quite something.”

As well as being a fascinating hobby, the club also offers opportunities to learn new skills – and to be inspired.

The display is at St Philip’s Church, Church Road, Webheath on May 7-8.
