All aboard as Redditch flies the flag at national RYA Dinghy Show

Redditch Editorial 24th Feb, 2021   0

DISCOVER all about sailing at the online virtual RYA Dinghy Show 2021.

It’s ideal for anyone inspired by the duel between Sir Ben Ainslie and Jimmy Spithill for the right to challenge for the America’s Cup – or who just fancies finding out more after watching the boats on a Sunday morning on the Arrow Valley Lake in normal times.

Not only that but Redditch Sailing Club is the only club flying the flag for the Midlands at the show, which is being held this weekend, February 27-28.

The club boasts a membership from as far afield as Stratford, Warwick, Worcester, Solihull and South Birmingham as well as closer to home.

The RYA Dinghy Show is free to enter and anyone dropping in can pop along to the Redditch SC stand and chat online to members and discover why sailing is probably the most satisfying sport there is, both physically and mentally.

For inspiration you only need to look to New Zealand where Ineos Team UK with multiple gold medal winning Olympian Ben Ainslie at the helm was knocked out by Jimmy Spithill, one of the helmsmen of the Italian boat Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

Ben of course is not stranger to British fans, while Spithill has not only previously won the America’s Cup – and successfully defended it – but in 2012 managed to cause an estimated $2million worth of damage to another Cup boat.

But whatever your ambition, the road starts in clubs like the one in Redditch.

Sir Ben Ainslie’s first international competition was at the age of 12 in an Optimist dinghy – and Optimist dinghies are very much in use for training at Redditch Sailing Club on the Arrow Valley Lake.

Not only that but the club has a complete roster of Royal Yachting Association trained instructors and runs regular courses training people from scratch to competent helmsmen and women.

Under the Covid-19 lockdown the club is currently closed, but anyone interested in finding out more can visit the show, talk to members through webchat and find out more about the world that awaits them.
