All the fun of the mop fair rolls into Alcester

Redditch Editorial 6th Oct, 2022   0

THRILLSEEKING members of Alcester Court Leet held onto their hats as they enjoyed all the fun of the fair.

The annual Mop Fair rolled into the town last week with white knuckle rides, candy floss and carousels aplenty.

And the Court Leet were on hand to perform the official opening ceremony.

The Royal Proclamation was read to a gathering of eager fair-goers outside the Royal Oak pub in High Street, before it was time to test out the rides.

And it appears the Court Leet – running in Alcester for the last 700 years with the aim of preserving the town’s traditions and ceremonies – has added riding the waltzers to their list of duties in recent years.

While later there was the traditional auctioning off of bread, fish and meat near St Nicholas Church and the giving away of free ale to keep everyone in high spirits.

The Mop Fair was granted to the Alcester Court Leet by the Royal Charter of King Edward I in 1292, but failed to mention the dodgems.
