All welcome as Redditch hosts thrills of first regional final of BMX season

Redditch Editorial 5th Apr, 2019   0

THE thrills and spills of BMX racing come to Redditch this Sunday, April 7, as the town hosts the first regional event of the season.

Hundreds of riders and their supporters are expected on the day ranging from the ‘pocket rockets’ in the three to six age bracket up to 73 years old!

Redditch is renowned across the UK as having one of the best BMX tracks in the country which has catapulted more than 20 riders into representing the town at national level.

“We have got a fantastic track and anyone is welcome to come down and have a go – we have bikes and protection gear available for just £7 for people to go out on the circuit and enjoy three hours of fun,” said a club spokesperson.

Six times Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy started out in BMX and top level coaches like Shanaze Reade have coached at the Icknield Street Drive club.

And for those who just want to race at a local level there’s plenty going on around the Midlands to give riders their BMX fix.

This Sunday promises to be a gala day with competitors – both male and female – competing from 9am to 5pm.

It’s also hoped that local councillor and Mayor of Redditch Juliet Brunner will also be there.

It’s not too late either for companies to help with sponsorship or raffle prizes – just search for Redditch Premiers BMX on Facebook.

The riders hold regular club nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 9pm and the curious and / or competitive are welcome to come down and take a look.
