All you need to know about the Birmingham Clean Air Zone which comes into force a week today

Redditch Editorial 25th May, 2021   0

DRIVERS of cars considered ‘high polluting’ need to be aware of the Clean Air Zone which comes into force in Birmingham a week today (Tuesday, June 1).

From that date, certain private cars and vans – primarily older models – which do not meet emissions standards will incur a daily £8 charge if they enter the Clean Air Zone.

The charge for buses, coaches and lorries, which do not comply with the requirements, will be £50.

The Clean Air Zone, which will operate 24-hours-a-day, 365 days-a-year, covers an area which falls within the A4540 Middleway (but not the Middleway itself). It covers most of Birmingham city centre and includes other areas, such as Hockley, Ladywood, Lee Bank and Highgate.

Temporary exemption permits are available for people who live in the Clean Air Zone and businesses within it which store vehicles overnight.

Those who live outside the zone but work more than 18 hours within it and earn less than £30,000 per year are also eligible for exemption.

A voucher scheme, which will enable visitors to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Attwood Green Medical Centre and Badger Medical Centre will be operational to cancel any charges online. Following conversations with the NHS, this scheme has also been extended to include Millennium Point as a mass vaccination centre.
