Ancient custom to bless orchard

AN ANCIENT tradition will be enacted in Headless Cross for the fourth time in recent years.

The annual wassail is set to take place at 7pm on Saturday (January 10) at Rocklands Social Club with a procession to the Green.

The event will be led by Bromsgrove town crier Kevin Ward and this year’s Wassail Queen Olivia Rose with music from Arrow Valley Brass Band.

Orchard volunteer Gabby Hemming said: “Wassail is an ancient custom that brings family, friends and neighbours together to pass on wishes of good health. It is a loud and lively event to awaken the trees and scare off unwanted spirits.

“So remember to bring pots and pans to bang, whistles to blow and horns to honk, as a right racket is required to help celebrate the good apple harvest and to ensure a fruitful crop next year.”
