Angry Redditch woman heads to Birmingham to protest against unfair State pension changes

A REDDITCH woman, angry that women born in the 1950s are thousands of pounds worse off due to State pension changes, is heading to Birmingham today (October 4) to protest at the Conservative Party Conference.

Judy Phillips, of Church Hill, has been retired four months and will now, like thousands of other women across the UK, have to wait years for her pension.

Mrs Phillips was so angry about the changes, she joined the pressure group WASPI, Women Against State Pension Inequality, whose aim is to achieve fair transitional state pension arrangements for women born in the 1950s.

More than 150 members of WASPI are heading to Birmingham today to show the country how they feel about State pension changes that mean women will now no longer receive their pension at 60 and they plan to hand their petitions to the MPs at the Conference.

Mrs Phillips said: “We want our voices to be heard.

“I am a shy person and I’m very new to this. But honestly, I am so angry about this and something needs to be done to help us women who have been affected.”

“Our local MP has failed to do much to help us, so we’re going to the top.”

Mrs Phillips, who told that Standard that the changes have left her £45,000 worse off, is encouraging others to come and support them and join WASPI.

“I worked for 40-odd years and put money towards my pension, which is a contract between me and the Government really,” she said.

“I’m 60 and I can’t collect my pension until I’m 66, meaning I’m £45,000 out of pocket. I am not the only one this has happened to.”
