THE Leader of Redditch Borough Council has issued an urgent appeal for residents to redouble their efforts to combat the coronavirus, Covid-19.

It comes after the number of cases of the disease in the town soared from three cases a week to 25.

Councillor Matt Dormer has issued a personal video asking people to adhere to the social distancing rules, to wash their hands regularly and to wear a face mask to prevent the spread of the disease.

He said: “This large increase does not appear to be as a result of a single workplace but is happening in the wider community.

“Therefore I need to appeal to all residents and businesses across Redditch to redouble your efforts to prevent the spread of this disease.”

The message comes as the number of Covid-19 infections steadily rises across the UK.

Scientists say the reproduction rate of the virus is increasing.

Nearby Birmingham is already close to being subject to a local lockdown while overseas in Hong Kong has come news that the first case of Covid re-infection has occurred.

Coun Dormer, speaking directly to the people of Redditch, said: “You must wash your hands regularly cover your face and maintain social distancing.

“This includes in our parks and open spaces, our shops, our restaurants, our bars and cafes.

“Given the increase is the result of community activity it is the responsibility of the community, of each and everyone to get this back down.”
