DESPITE the rain, spirits were not dampened at the annual Headless Cross Community Orchard Apple Day and crowds braved the deluge to sample local foods, crafts and soak up the community atmosphere.

The event on Saturday (October 1) was opened and closed by french horn combo ‘Horny Mental’ who’s eclectic mix of music kept the crowd entertained alongside acoustic sets by Alan Sheward and Joby Capper.

Local families gathered to take part in the community apple pressing, taking away fresh apple juice as the fruits of their labour and Deputy Mayor Jenny Wheeler unveiled a painting of King Kong climbing the water tower by Steve Pound, before presenting the engraved tankard prize to the winner of the cider competition.

This year’s competition saw 14 different hand crafted local ciders entered and a panel of three judges worked their way through the zesty tipples John Whitfield with his Radford Orchard cider the winner.

Orchard volunteer Lee Jennings said: “We would like to thank everyone who supported us and we look forward to seeing them at our next events.”
