ARMED police officers in Redditch arrested a man on suspicion of rape on Wednesday evening, June 2.
He was detained by officers at around 5.20pm by the fast food outlets on the A4023 Coventry Highway.
A police spokesman said the vehicle was wanted in the West Midlands and it was ‘pinged’ by an Automatic Number Plate Recognition camera, sparking the operation by West Mercia officers.
The driver, in his 20s, was wanted on suspicion of rape and police had also received intelligence he could be armed.
He was detained and taken into custody and has since been transferred to Oldbury in the West Midlands Police force area.
Eyewitnesses spoke of their alarm at the incident.
One said: “It was a scary situation seeing someone being arrested by police with guns.
“I have never seen so many police officers with firearms.”
A police spokesperson said: At around 5.15pm on Wednesday, June 2, officers were alerted to a vehicle travelling on the A435 at Beckett’s Farm, which was wanted by colleagues from West Midlands Police.
Authorised firearms officers stopped the vehicle on the A4023 Coventry Highway and one man in 20s from the West Midlands was arrested on suspicion of rape and taken into custody.
He has since been transferred to West Midlands Police.
