Artist Elaine opens a window into the VE Day celebrations

THERE’S a Spitfire over the White Cliffs of Dover in a stunning window mural painted by Alcester artist Elaine Bell.

Elaine of Birch Abbey, got out the paint palette in an effort to cheer everyone up and celebrate VE Day in style.

“It took me about ten hours to do,” she said. “I did the Spitfires and soldiers in the corners and then my husband said ‘you’ve got the Army and the Royal Air Force, where’s the Navy?’ so I put a warship in off the White Cliffs.

“He’s also mad on Churchill so I put the V for Victory sign in, a rainbow for the NHS and VE 75.”

Elaine mainly works in watercolours or does clay sculptures but painted the window in acrylics so it could be easily scraped off.

“My husband thinks I’m nuts but we’re both going to be out in the front garden and making the most of the day.”
