AN Astwood Bank man has raised nearly £2,000 for charity after completing a solo mountain bike trek to Aberystwyth.

Despite torrential rain, Alex Layton, aged 25, managed to complete the 120-mile trip to the mid-Wales resort in just 12 hours.

The money will help to save lives in Tanzania, paying for improvements to the supply of water and sanitation.

Alex, who graduated from Aberystwyth University in International Politics and Strategic Studies, is on the government-funded International Citizen Service programme.

As part of a Raleigh International project, he will be part of a team on a three-month trip to rural Tanzania to assist with sustainable development. He heads off to Africa on Tuesday.

Alex said: “My legs hurt after the ride, but it was all for a good cause. I would like to thank all who sponsored me.”

Money is still rolling in and reached almost £1,900 by the weekend. Anyone who would like to donate can go to https://www.justgiving.com/Alex-Layton
