THE Vikings are rowing up the River Arrow to Studley – for a day-long celebration of brilliant British history.
And they’ll be just one part of the festivities which will culminate in a family friendly production of William Shakespeare’s renowned final play The Tempest, performed by the village’s famed Aunty Jen Productions.
Billed as Studley’s Summer Shakespearience, as well as the Svartland Vikings – who’ll be setting up camp and re-enacting battles – there will be two groups of Morris Dancers, Gloriana, an Elizabethan dance troupe, Tudor experts Lady Lippett’s Household and much more, including have-a-go longbow archery courtesy of Events From History plus face painting, stalls, food and drink.
“After the success of last year’s Jubilee events we thought we’d do something really different this year and bring some living history to the village, something really large scale,” said Jen Rigby of Aunty Jen Productions.
“We also wanted to celebrate the publication of the First Folio of all of Shakespeare’s plays 400 years ago in 1623, and with that in mind the two people behind it, Heminges and Condell, will be making special ‘guest’ appearances at the beginning and end of The Tempest!”
In addition Studley History Society will also be there to chat about the village’s past.
It’s all taking place outdoors at Studley Sports and Social Club, just off the High Street, on Saturday, June 17, from 10am to 5pm with the Aunty Jen players taking to the stage at 2pm for The Tempest.
“Once again we’d like to thank our costume ladies who do so much work for us and of course local heavy haulage firm Allely’s for once again providing us with a trailer for our stage,” said Jen.
Tickets for the event, which features seven hours of entertainment, cost just £10 for adults and £8 for children.
And if it rains? “We will carry on regardless!” said Jen.
