Bad week for MP amid ‘emotional’ Syria vote

THE aftermath of last Wednesday’s (December 2) Syria air strikes vote has been described by Redditch MP Karen Lumley as one of the worst weeks in her political career.

Speaking at a business leaders meeting on Friday (December 4) at the town’s Abbey Hotel, Mrs Lumley described seeing colleagues in tears prior to casting their vote and shared how she herself had received a death threat in the wake of the landmark decision.

Speaking after the meeting she said: “It was very stressful, it always is very difficult when you are trying to make a decision which affects people’s lives.

“Passions are running high, not just in Redditch but in the Chamber too – I have received lots of letters as expected and indeed as I want, but what I don’t want are the inappropriate messages and comments on Facebook and email.

“I had one wishing me a long slow death – that person has been spoken to by the police but at the end of the day I am a human being and just an ordinary person like you.

“I do my best to serve the people of Redditch and I am quite open with my home address and my contact details are all public but that is my family home where my family live and they are not politicians.

“Some people need to be a little bit more careful about what they do in anger.”
