A UNIQUE badge detailing the beauty, history and heritage of Redditch will soon be winging its way across the globe thanks to a borough pupil.
Brandon Pegler’s design was chosen out of more than 50 entries as part of a competition to create a new scout badge to mark the 50th anniversary of Redditch’s designation as a new town.
The 15-year-old Tudor Grange Academy Redditch student’s design includes a tree to represent the four million plus trees Redditch has, the Kingfisher bird to represent The Kingfisher Shopping Centre and a water powered mill to represent Forge Mill. The River Arrow and a needle to mark Redditch’s needle industry and contribution to the world are also recognised on the badge.
It will now be sold to raise funds towards the £19,000 needed to send six young people from Redditch District Scouts to the World Scout Jamboree in Japan next July, as well as be presented as a gift to their host families.
The competition was run by Redditch District Scouts and The Standard and supported by Redditch MP Karen Lumley who donated a £10 WH Smith voucher to the winner. The winning design was chosen by judges Daniel Stanley, Ellen Cockram, Tom Willetts, Josh Thompson and district commissioner Sylvia Summers.
Competition organiser Danny Cockram said: “The standard of entries was very high and it was a difficult choice for our young judges. This will be a wonderfully unique gift to present to our host families, a badge designed and chosen by children in Redditch.”
