BATCHLEY Support Group (BSG) is appealing for more volunteers after being forced to cancel its popular ‘Cool by the Pool’ event.
The organisation, which has been running since 1984 says it ‘just doesn’t have the man-power’ to put on the.
It will be replaced by a sing-along showing of ‘The Greatest Showman’ at HDA Sports and Social Club on August 18.
“Bring your picnic, blanket and tell all your friends and family to come, ” said BSG trustee Jan Barron.
“One of the reasons we’ve had to stop Cool by the Pool is because we no longer get help from local inmates doing community work.
“They helped us set up stalls and entertainment but that’s all been stopped.
“We just don’t have enough volunteers in general, not just with Cool by the Pool, but with everything we do.”
BSG provides a range of services, including feeding those in need.
The volunteers head out to local supermarkets to collected unwanted food before it gets thrown away.
They use it to feed needy families as well as providing a breakfast club at Batchley First School.
“We do a bit of everything,” said trustee June Barley, “we will help in any way we can.
“It could mean offering someone a warm shower, or a place to wash their clothes, or simply stocking them up with enough toilet roll for the week.
“We drive elderly people to dental and doctors appointments and hold afternoon tea and craft sessions for them at our base on Salters Lane.
“It’s hard to pinpoint just one thing we do because we try to do a bit of everything.”
The service even provides mental health peer groups for both men and women and offers advice on sexual health, drug abuse, self-care and general counselling.
