Bel Canto Singers are back and hitting all the high notes

THE Bel Canto Singers are back and hitting all the high notes, if their recent appearance on BBC Radio 2 is anything to go by.

On June 2 the choir featured on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show singing the nation’s favourite ‘Sweet Caroline’.

Choir chair Polly Speers said they had only decided to take part in the event the previous Monday evening, when secretary Veronica Porter took a video at rehearsal and sent it off the following morning.

Just two days later, at the opening of the Jubilee celebration, their rendition of Sweet Caroline was played to the nation.

“It’s a fabulous start for us,” said Polly, “and certainly puts Redditch and Bromsgrove on the musical map.”

As a choir Bel Canto Singers have been singing and making music together since 1990 and are so pleased to announce their annual Celebratory Concert at St Laurence’s Church, Alvechurch at 7.30pm on July 2.

And there’s much to celebrate too, including their delayed 30th anniversary and, of course, the Jubilee.

The event will open with two stirring pieces of patriotic music and continue with many of the Bel Canto Singers’ favourites.

The evening will also include duets from Wendy and Jon Quirk and there will be the opportunity for all to participate led by Wendy from the piano.

Tickets – available from members or at – are £8.

Each year Bel Canto Singers support a local charity and donations in the past have gone to the Blue Cross, Rory the Robot Worcestershire Prostate Cancer Surgical Robot Appeal and the Alzheimers Association, to name a few.

On May 23 the choir put on a special fund-raising concert for Ukraine at St John’s Church, Longbridge.

The singers performed a wonderful selection of music and thanks to the generosity of the audience a grand total of £862 was raised.
