TOWN criers from across the region and beyond will be descending on Alcester tomorrow (Saturday, April 19) for the annual Heart of England Town Criers’ Competition.
A total of 11 colourful competitors from as far afield as Suffolk will be shouting it out for the honour of being named this year’s champion.
The spectacle starts with a noisy procession from the town hall in Henley Street at 12.45pm with the competition commencing at 1.15pm in the historic surrounds of Malt Mill Lane gardens.
Event organiser Vaughan Blake said: “Once again Alcester welcomes competitors to the annual Heart of England Town Criers’ Championship.
“The event has been held in the town for over 50 years and, being the first event of the season, continues to be the favourite event of many criers.”
Each crier will be judged on the clarity, volume and diction of their two cries – one about the town they represent and a second on the subject of ‘life before mobile phones’.
There will also be a prize awarded to the best dressed crier.
