Big switch on in Alcester as the town gears up for St Nicholas Night

THE streets were absolutely packed last week in Alcester for the grand switch on of the Christmas Lights.

Youngsters Elsie Lyn Simons and Harry Parkes, both aged seven, will a little bit of help from Alcester Court Leet performed the ceremony which lit up the town for the festive season.

Night was falling as the crowds began to gather around St Nicholas Church ready for the ceremony and as the sun began to sink below the horizon the two youngsters stepped forward to bring light to the town.

The lights had been put up and financed by Alcester voluntary group ABLE – Alcester Bunting and Lighting and mulled wine and mince pies were on hand provided by the Elves of Alcester & Bidford Rotary Club.




This Friday Alcester holds its St Nicholas Night celebration with Christmas Shopping, Santa’s Grotto, children’s rides, a parade of classic and rally vehicles and a host of other festive attractions.

The opening ceremony is at 5.45pm with music from 6pm before the of the Boy Bishop, classic vehicles and town organisations at 7pm.


At 7.30pm Alcester Victoria Silver Band strike followed by the White Hart Morris Men and special guests Aelfgythe Border Morris at 8pm.

At 8.30pm the fireworks extravaganza will begin with peace returning at 9pm with the Compline Service in St Nicholas Church.
