PUPILS from Birchensale Middle School left no room on the podium in the indoor rowing competition at the Worcestershire Mini Olympics, writes Natalia Lejzak.

There were 65 schools competing against each other for the title of the Worcestershire County Champions across 17 sports including swimming, athletics, tennis and boccia.

Birchensale showed tremendous talent in rowing representing Redditch in individual 2-minute and 3-minute rows, as well as an 8-minute indoor rowing relay.

Four strong Year 7 girls from Birchensale claimed all top spots.

The Year 7 boys earned 5th place and Year 8 Boys achieving a 2nd, 3rd and 4th places.

The successes continued with the Year 8 girls crossing the finish line 1st by three metres.

The Worcestershire Local Organising Committee held the event to motivate children to be more active and to give them an opportunity to take part in more competitive sports.

Dave Watson, an Invictus Games double gold and silver medalist, said: “Opportunities like the school games are so important, particularly in this day and age.

“With the advancements in technology, children are missing out on social aspects such as making new friends.”

Alongside Birchensale’s success, Webheath Academy earned first place in the KS2 Archery and St Bede’s Middle School won the boccia.
