Brilliant Joshua goes from 'D' to 'A' to triumph at British Education Awards

JOSHUA Lambden was predicted to get a D in Maths when he was 15 years-old – now he’s just come top in his England Zone 1 category at the British Education Awards in Manchester.

Named the Made in Midlands Apprentice of the Year 2019, Joshua, now aged 20, is forging a bright future for himself after opting to go into an apprenticeship rather than continuing on at school or college.

“He just went straight into an apprenticeship – with Hydraforce in Aston – and it’s been fantastic for him,” said his dad Phil, who lives in Church Hill.

“He’s now done a foundation degree with them and is into his first year studying electrical and control engineering and when he completes it he’ll have the skills, the job, and be debt free.”

This week has been National Apprenticeship Week 2020, an opportunity to discover more about doing an apprenticeship and skills and qualities they can provide.

However Phil is aware it’s not an easy option and Joshua had to work hard to get where he is today.

“He was on for a D for his Maths when he was 15-years-old and I knew something had to be done,” he said.

“I got in touch with his old Maths teacher and he came along and gave him private lessons. Joshua knuckled under and it took him about six and then suddenly he got it, and he hasn’t looked back since.

“Now he’s doing calculations that completely baffle the likes of me.

“However Joshua has shown that a normal lad from a comprehensive school can get an apprenticeship and then go on to thrive and get top grades and go forward to winning national recognition for his efforts.”
