Cabinet asked to progress new railway station for Redditch

WORCESTERSHIRE County Council’s Cabinet will decide at a meeting next week (October 27) whether to allocate £10million of funding towards a new railway station in Redditch.

In March 2021, Cabinet approved the acquisition of the land required to redevelop Redditch Railway Station.

The station proposals form the first phase of a wider project aimed at creating a modern attractive gateway to Redditch for commuters and visitors.

This will fulfil the town’s role as the final destination on the Cross-City railway from Birmingham.

The project, if given the go ahead, will involve the construction of a new station building, and the creation of new public area in front of the station connecting to Redditch town centre.

There will also be an upgraded crossing over Unicorn Hill and access to the existing bus interchange to the Kingfisher Centre.

Coun Marc Bayliss, Worcestershire County Council cabinet member for economy said: “It is important to secure the additional funding to move the project forward.

“If Cabinet Members agree with the recommendations, the ambition of delivering a new station ‘gateway’ for Redditch is a step closer to becoming a reality.

“This is essential to support economic growth and improve the area for local people, commuters, visitors and businesses in the town.”

The recommendation, if approved, will secure the funding necessary to deliver the station, supporting access for all modes of transport including rail, bus, taxi, drop off/pick up, cycling and walking.
