Call for donations as Redditch Labour get set for uniform bank

Correspondent 15th Jul, 2020

REDDITCH Labour Party’s uniform bank is set to return this August to help families with the substantial costs of school uniform.

With the cost of a full uniform set costing around the £150 – a blazer alone can cost £32 – the initiative should prove a welcome boost for hard pressed local families.

Councillor Joe Baker (Greenlands) originally came up with the idea to help families through harsh cuts imposed as a result of austerity.

“We are now in the seventh year and we are seeing families struggling more than ever to get uniform for their children,” he said.

“Last year was the busiest one to date with more than 630 people attending.

“This year we are expecting an increase as coronavirus has forced a drop in income for so many families.”

The uniform bank also saves thousands of items from just being disposed of so it’s good for the environment too.

Prospective Winyates candidate Sharon Harvey said: “Reusing and recycling is part of our green agenda. We shouldn’t be wasting valuable textile resources when we are facing a global climate emergency.”

In a move to meet current Covid-19 safety guidelines there will be two open air events to avoid large indoor gatherings.

These will be on Saturday, August 15 in the town centre and Sunday, August 16 in Church Hill.

Exact times and venues to be confirmed soon.

“We urgently need donations of school uniform – especially logo items, blazers and PE kits,” said Andrew Bevan, prospective candidate for Matchborough.

“School shoes and trainers are also accepted. All items donated must be in a good, clean condition.

“We cannot pass on worn out, discoloured or damaged items.”

Donations can be brought to Omega Therapies in Hewell Road, Batchley up until Monday, August 10.
