Cancer survivor Teresa stepping out to raise sums for Coppafeel!

A COURAGEOUS breast cancer survivor is stepping out on a 100km trek in the Sahara Desert to raise vital sums for the charity Coppafeel!

Mum of two Teresa Cotton from Church Hill, who has been on an emotional rollercoaster since first being diagnosed in 2020, is hoping to raise £2,750 for the cause.

CoppaFeel! is a charity on a mission to stamp out the late diagnosis of breast cancer by making sure that young people are regularly checking their boobs, pecs and chests and getting to know their bodies so they have the confidence to see their GP if something doesn’t feel normal.

“I’m lucky, I’ve fully recovered, but I was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 39 and I felt then it couldn’t possibly happen to me, that I was too young,” said Teresa.

“That’s why I’m supporting Coppafeel! to give more young women the courage to get themselves checked out if they think something is amiss.

“And it’s amazing how, once you get into it and start fundraising you suddenly discover just how many people have been affected by it.”

Teresa’s appeal comes as high profile stars like Emmerdale’s Malandra Burrows and BBC podcaster Deborah James have revealed their own battles against cancer.

For Teresa, her world fell apart in March 2020 when what she had been told was likely to be a cyst was found in fact to be Stage 3 breast cancer.

What followed is chronicled on her Just Giving page, in which she writes: “The room went dark. I couldn’t breathe. WHAT? HOW? No, this doesn’t happen to people like me! How can I have? It’s just a cyst? I’m too young! Cysts are very common. You were sure it was a cyst!”

She continues: “I was instantly scared that I was going to die. I couldn’t stop thinking about my husband and my children. How was I going to tell them this?”

What followed was a world of ups and downs, panic attacks, chemotherapy sessions to shrink the tumour, she lost her hair, formed fantastic friendships with fellow sufferers before finally emerging with the all clear following her operation.

Now, accompanied by her two children, aged nine and ten, and encouraged by her husband Nick, she is in training for her trek, where she will be joined by celebrities Giovanna Fletcher and Vicky Pattison as they set off across the Sahara.
